A Companion to Under the Volcano
Published in Hardcover by Univ of British Columbia (May, 1984)
Authors: Chris Ackerley and Lawrence J. Clipper
Average review score:

Companion to Under the Volcano
This book consists of thousands of explanatory notes to Malcolm Lowry's brilliant but labyrinthine novel. The notes are arranged in chapters corresponding to those in Under the Volcano. Each note is headed by page references to the Penguin and Signet Plume paperback editions as well as the Reynal & Hitchcock and Lippincott hardback editions. The Companion features maps of Cuernavaca and the Morelos Valley, a glossary of Spanish, French, German and Latin terms found in Under the Volcano, an index and a bibliography.

Malcolm Lowry liberally used obscure and archaic words and double entendre in his writings. He frequently employed foreign phrases as well. The Companion defines, translates, explains and contextualizes all of these unfamiliar terms. Throughout Under the Volcano, Lowry weaved in allusions to mythology, religion, literature, history and pop culture. Sometimes the allusions are direct, but more often than not, they are hidden. The Companion is very useful in identifying and understanding these allusions. For example, Lowry repeatedly uses the term "coxcox" as an adjective. The Companion offers plausible interpretations for the passages containing this term, points out that Coxcox was a figure in Aztec mythology corresponding to Noah in the Bible and provides verifiable references.

The Companion takes particular care in explaining the recurring motifs and allusions, such as the abyss, the stray dogs which seem to follow the Consul everywhere, Los Manos De Orlac, the horse with the number 7 branded on its hip and "no se puede vivir sin amar." In this respect, the Companion is well worth its price. The explanatory notes are fascinating and, occasionally, poignant. Don't be surprised if the Companion leads you to explore some of the obscure and long-forgotten literary works to which Lowry alluded.

Complete Guide to All United States Military Medals 1939 to Present
Published in Paperback by Medals of America Press (September, 2000)
Authors: Frank C. Foster and Lawrence H. Borts
Average review score:

A compendium of honor and beauty
"A Complete Guide to All United States Military Medals 1939 to Present," here in its fifth edition, is an authoritative reference work which should be on the shelves of every library--school, public, and military--in the United States. Co-authors Frank Foster and Lawrence Borts have an obvious love and respect for their subject, and this commitment shows on every one of the book's pages.

This is as complete a guide to U.S. military ribbons and medals as I could imagine. The authors describe the history and criteria of each award and provide clear full-color photographs of each one. The book also contains detailed information about the various devices worn on each ribbon, guides to the proper wear of medals and ribbons on the uniform, and much more. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine awards are all covered. There is even a special section on United Nations mission medals.

This book would make a great gift for veterans, currently serving military personnel, and amateur military historians. The many illustrations make this book a truly beautiful reference work. But more than that, this book is a meaningful tribute to the women and men who have actually earned these medals and ribbons over the years. As a veteran myself, I want to thank and congratulate Frank Foster and Lawrence Borts for a stunning achievement. I look forward to the sixth edition.

Complete Jacob Lawrence

Authors: Jacob Lawrence, Peter T. Nesbett, and Michelle Dubois
Average review score:

Complete Jacob Lawrence
Jacob Lawrence spent his fascinating, fruitful life building
an enormous contribution to the world of art and this two-volume
set captures nearly every aspect of it in an absolutely beautiful
fashion... owning this set is an honor. Open either volume ANYWHERE
and it becomes immediately clear that the authors and publisher have
done their work well. To have us understand at the outset that
the artist operated far beyond the scope of the ordinary and into a
full grasp of all sorts of levels of abstraction is quite an
accomplishment in and of itself. These books do it. To be able to see
all the known paintings, drawings and sketches is great. To also read
about the life of such a brilliant person, the background for his
works, his long and
"without-whom-it-wouldn't-have-been-possible"marriage to his
equally-talented and beautiful wife Gwen, along with the history of the
styles and media pushes the palette into the soul of the reader!
